Overview
Since early 2019, CNIM Asia has been supplying quenches for German shipping companies, ensuring compliance with international SOx emission standards. These large-scale stainless steel quenches are integral to the emission control systems on merchant vessels.
Challenge
The project required the manufacturing and delivery of sixteen quenches within a very short lead time. The quenches, each measuring 3.6 meters in diameter, 2.6 meters in height, and weighing 3 tons, had to be installed aboard merchant vessels at engine outlets. The key challenges included:
• Short Lead Times: Manufacturing and delivering ten units within seven months.
• Tight Installation Window: Freight transport vessels stop at ports for at most one week, requiring quick delivery and on-site assembly.
• High-Quality Standards: Ensuring the quenches meet strict international emission standards.
Solution
Local Sourcing and Reactive Teams
By leveraging local sourcing and highly reactive teams, CNIM Industrial Systems China ensured the timely manufacture and delivery of high-quality quenches. The manufacturing process was carried out in our workshops in Gaoming, with a strong focus on quality and precision.
Efficient Coordination and Installation
CNIM Asia’s teams coordinated the on-site installation, ensuring the quenches were delivered and installed within the tight one-week window at the ports of Qingdao and Zhoushan. This involved:
• Precise Scheduling: Coordinating with shipping schedules to ensure timely delivery.
• On-Site Supervision: Providing on-site supervision to oversee the assembly and installation process, ensuring it was completed efficiently and accurately.
Outcome
CNIM Asia successfully manufactured and delivered ten quenches within the specified time frame, enabling the retrofitting of ten merchant vessels during their stopovers. The remaining six units are planned for delivery, ensuring ongoing compliance with SOx emission standards. The project highlights CNIM Asia’s capability to deliver high-quality stainless steel products under tight deadlines, leveraging local resources and expertise.
